"In dialogue, people gain insights that simply cannot be achieved individually.” Peter Sengi
From November 1 to 20, 2024, Le Papillon Art Gallery is pleased to present you a curatorial project "Dialogues II" - the result of an initiated creative provocation to several artists. After the successful presentation of Dialogues I in 2023, the foundation of a new tradition was laid, uniting contemporary Bulgarian artists from different genres and generations.
The project is confirmed as a successful initiative, passing through several stages - provocation, discussion, topic, dialogue, finished work, the culmination of which is the presentation of the works in an exhibition. The opening of the exhibition on November 1st is also the event that the gallery team has chosen to mark the Day of People's Awakeners and 17 years of exhibition activity.
The curatorial project expresses one of the main missions of the gallery to provoke, mediate and realize dialogue, both between the artists themselves and between artists and the public. In the 5 dialogue pairs formed, the names of magnificent artists whose creative energy carries a strong charge are recognized. Definite skills and reactivity of our time are demonstrated. The topics chosen for a kind of pictorial dialogue by each couple, evoking verbal conversations and multiplying the synergy of their creative wave in impactful works, also arouse curiosity:
"Touch": Angelika Radeva - Valeri Chakalov
"Ordinary": Veselin Nachev - Galab Galabov
"Smoke": Dimitar Cholakov - Milcho Talev
"Levitation": Ivo Bistrichki - Ralitsa Stoitseva
"The Lake": Mariana Marinova - Mimi Dobreva
Through this project, the gallery provokes recognized artists, each of them choosing their collocutor for a mutual dialogue fulfilled with the means of fine art. Based on the conversations between each of the five discussing pairs of artists, the different topics were also formed.
The dialogue between Angelika Radeva and Valeri Chakalov is provocative and has a very modern sound. While in Angelika's work "Touch" is such an expressive and almost literal physical sensation, in Prof. Chakalov's work it is rather intuitive, ephemeral, with the suggestion of the geometry of the forms and layering like a snowfall of pastes and pigments on clear reliefs. In Angelika Radeva's voluminous painting, which begins with sculpting the form and then wrapping it by stretching the canvas over the desired shape or silhouette, the young author pays tribute to Yves Klein, considered a pioneer in performance art, from whom she draws inspiration for her monochrome painting. Yves Klein's color is dominant in her work and accordingly also evokes an intensely colorful response from Prof. Chakalov.
"Ordinary" is the theme that inspired the following couple in their reactivity and in observing the everyday, ordinary actions of the people they meet, and so do we. The idea brings together two brush masters of different approaches to contemporary figurative painting in the person of Veselin Nachev and Galab Galabov. At first glance, trivial and ordinary activities of our daily life, such as a walk on a sunny afternoon, combing hair in the works of Galab Galabov or the gentle caress outlined as a marking sign by Veselin Nachev, but in these actions the momentary inner emotional state of the figure is sealed, part of the landscape.
The painterly dialogue in the pair of artists Milcho Talev and Dimitar Cholakov is conducted on the subject of "Smoke" or, more precisely, analyzing the metaphor that smoke is a sign of the presence of life. The painterly layering and depth of layers, even in gray, in Milcho Talev's monochrome painting are balanced by the imaginary aerial sensation of smoke with real coals included in Dimitar Cholakov's abstract painting. And if in one author we observe an escape from concreteness and a space free of form and plot, in the other the story stimulates the viewer's imagination.
When meeting the works of Ralitsa Stoitseva and Ivo Bistrichki, the theme "Levitation" naturally arises. With an interesting modern interpretation of the classic image of Aurora, Ivo Bistrichki turns "classic" into "modern". His painting creates a feeling of weightlessness, eternity and impermanence, without unnecessary verbiage we perceive an elevation - the levitation of the spirit and the body. Levitation is often present in Ralitsa Stoitseva's work. In her large-format canvases, she often incorporates three-dimensional objects that seem to float in space. And the "metallic shine", absorbing the gaze in Ivo Bistrichki's painting, seems to be reflected in the metal plate - an element of Ralitsa Stoitseva's work.
"The lake" is the common reference point in the pictorial dialogue between Mariana Marinova and Mimi Dobreva, perhaps because they often shared moments of their friendship there. The first is a painterly explorer of flickering reflections, and the second is already a confirmed symbol of the green and natural elements specific to her work. The works of both are calm, honest, meditative. The lake, like a mirror, reflects feelings and emotions, and if we keep our eyes on it long enough, we lose sight of reality. This is exactly how Mariana Marinova's picturesque reflections on a canvas confuse our minds, and "Floating Clouds" appear in the lake. Mimi Dobreva's paintings are like a metaphor for water, like a mirror of the world around us.
Dialogue, in its basic meaning, is a conversation between two or more interlocutors on a specific topic on a completely equal footing. Because dialogue is more important than consensus, and in dialogue with others we can find ourselves, going beyond our own human limits. And if at first glance these dialogues are composed of parallel monologues, the feeling of a conversation, although conducted in the exquisite language of color and brush, is convincingly present. By providing a creative environment for conversations, the gallery stimulates both thought and sensibility, because in conducting a dialogue we are convinced that it is not so much the questions that are important, but the answers and reactions. The realization of the current project coincides coincidentally with the many political debates that took over the warm colors of autumn, and this somehow further distinguished it and gave an even greater height to art in its general sense, situating it above the mundane.
Dialogue is an endless conversation, just as the variety of viewpoints and arguments we can engage in an intelligent conversation is endless. Dialogue cannot be divided into parts because it is infinite, and the infinite has no middle. These features of the dialogue give Karl Jaspers reason to say that the great philosophers conduct a dialogue in the great time of history. Therefore, we too can liken the history of human culture to a conversation with variations on eternal questions, on which artists who are emblematic of their art reflect.
The desire of the gallery is to initiate the creation of new works, of a completely new cultural product of high artistic value, through dialogues between artists who are at small or large distances, like each other's work and provoke each other. And provocation in art gives impetus to the development of artists and increases its artistic value.
Welcome to the opening of the exhibition on 01.11.2024 /Friday/ at 18.00 in the exhibition hall of the Art Gallery Le Papillon to share our celebration, which is also a celebration of all followers of our activity, authors with whom we work and admirers of valuable art!
